Regulated Online Gambling Available in Mexico

Latin America is the next biggest market on the verge of opening up to regulated online gambling and Mexico is making that idea a reality. In December of 2014 it was announced that the gambling bill introduced to the national government legislature of Mexico has been approved. An agreement between the National Action Party (PAN) and the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) is paving the way for operators located in the country to secure licenses for the activity. Unfortunately the new rules will not permit Mexico to participate in any international compacts.

The National Action Party Deputy Jose Arturo Salinas Garza made positive comments about the transparency of the regulatory platform, "With this law now all Mexicans can know how many casinos are in Mexico, which permits have been granted, which are operational, who the owners are and who the partners are." Mexico has been reluctant to legislate online gambling which invests most of its resources in the battle against the corruption involving drug cartels.  Those same cartels have established unregulated casinos and illegal gambling operations in Mexico. The new regulatory platform has installed measures against money laundering and established a minimum gambling age of 21 making the new laws more palatable to the Mexican public.

It was recently announced that offshore operators are ready to enter the market in Mexico and United Kingdom gambling services operator Ladbrokes has entered the digital market in Mexico via Sportium, in a  joint venture with slot machine company Cirsa.  Sportium which is located in Spain is leveraging the regulated offline operations of Cirsa’s Mexican casino operation Casino Life.

Damian Cope, Ladbrokes international managing director commented, “Sportium continues to grow strongly through our retail and digital channels in Spain and we see further growth opportunities in that country. However, the strength of Cirsa’s extensive offline presence across Latin America now allows the joint venture to expand in that region. This digital entry into Mexico is very much a first step in our plans, not the culmination.”
