It’s a little disappointing to see Hacksaw Gaming out here chasing trends, let alone doing even that in a surprisingly restrained way. I mean, don’t get mе wrong, this is a fun immersive pirate-themed game, but it’s not really a Hacksaw pirate game.

There is nothing inherently wrong with the three-pot hold-and-win mechanic, as evidenced by its immense popularity. Still, here we see Hacksaw take a tried-and-true mechanic and, instead of doing something unique with it, build for broad appeal.

Only one of the chests can be active at a time, no confluence of different modifiers that might come up with a uniquely appealing set of bonuses. Again, though, all three chest mechanics are fun, if simple and seem to target different audiences, but that is our biggest gripe as well; the whole thing feels put together by a focus group.

The other slightly odd thing for a Hacksaw title is the mediumish volatility, and yet they still kept the RTP at a very respectable 96.3%. The hit frequency at 47.29% may, in fact, be the highest hit frequency we’ve ever seen on a Hacksaw title.

The aforementioned Cursed Chests sit above the reels in green, red and blue. Collect the like-colored pots off the 5×3 reels to charge the chests. The green chest, when triggered, can award a Cursed Wild Respin. This means that you may see wilds or even wild multipliers during the respin. Wilds substitute for any symbol, and the multipliers; yep, multiply by the shown value from 2x to 100x.

The Red Chest features a Cursed Coins Bonus. This equates basically to 3 free respins. There are bronze, silver and gold coins, but it’s the diamonds you’re after with values of 50x to 100x, compared to the bronze coins at 0.2x to 1x. Every time you land a coin, you get another life/respin.

With the Blue Chest activated, the Cursed FS Respin starts. You are down to just scatter symbols and dead symbols on the reels, and you need seven of the scatters to kick off the first bonus round called Treasure Cove. Land at least six scatters, and one of the scatter upgrades can play in the Ghostly Gallows Bonus.

To access the two bonus games, we first need to charge and activate the blue chest. Then we need to land seven or more of the scatters. Each scatter you land is a free spin, so the more the better.

Treasure Cove is the first bonus round; you’ll start with 7 to 15 free spins. Same base game, but now land at least three of the same color pots, and the chest is guaranteed to unlock. One thing we liked is that if you unlock the red chest, the whole Cursed Coins Bonus sequence only counts as one of your respins.

More scatters during the bonus round mean more free spins, and an FS Upgrade symbol kicks you into the next bonus round, Ghostly Gallows, with your remaining free spins and an additional random 2x to 10x spins.

90x buys you straight into Treasure Cove

In Ghostly Gallows, you need only one pot to activate the corresponding chest, which can lead to all kinds of booty piling up. Scatters again can add to your respins in this round as well, and a Scatter upgrade gives you anywhere from 2x to 10x spins on top of that.

Now, if you’re looking for great Pirate themed titles but felt 3 Cursed Chests was a bit lacking in nautical themes, we heartily recommend Cursed Seas, atmospheric, volatile and a full set of mixed mechanics, this is what a Hacksaw Pirate game is meant to be.

Safe Waters, Small Treasures

This feels less like Hacksaw trying to reinvent private titles or three-pot slots and more like the studio has decided to prove it can make a broad-appeal game. Volatility is lower, hit frequency is unusually high, and the features are straightforward, almost unnecessarily so.

For longtime Hacksaw fans, of which I consider myself one, there may be a sense that they left too much gunpowder below decks. But the mechanics are fun and polished, and there is just enough treasure and approachable gameplay to justify the voyage.
