Leaving the very strong Felix the Cat vibe we get from this slot out of it, we still feel Willy Wildwing is more of a name for a duck than a cat. What about maybe Felix Flyboy or Tommy Tailspin? Heck, Ameowa Catheart, or PssPss Lindpurrrgh aren’t bad either, but I guess we will have to just settle for what Hacksaw Gaming has given us.

Don’t get us wrong, they perfectly captured the barnstorming era in their animation, and the little soundtrack, and the smoke machine sidekick is a nice touch. They also stuck to medium volatility, which we find a bit more relaxing than the flying-by-the-seat-of-your-pants feeling we get from some high-volatility Hacksaw releases.

Willy has a 5×4 grid to joyride about in, and 14 fixed paylines that require at least three matching symbols on adjacent reels from left to right, but hey, that’s the easy part. Things get more interesting when the Smoke Machine and Airplane symbols decide to get in on the action.

During every spin, there is a chance that Old Smokey will activate. He can randomly add anywhere from one to ten Wild Smoke symbols across our layout. These act as a type of Wild, substituting for all symbols, but also rather crucially, adding multipliers as well.

These Wilds carry multipliers that can add from 2x all the way up to 100x. Get two or more in the same win and those multipliers are added together. We aren’t going to pretend that Willy covers new ground in that plane of his, not once you truly get under the cowling. Hacksaw has certainly given us these mechanics before, but we don’t necessarily mind catching a flight when the scenery is this much fun.

Willy Wildwing might have been better with a more cat-tastic name, but the animation is on point, the soundtrack is great, and the medium volatility lets us play for a while, without all that white-knuckled Hacksaw volatility we normally see.
