An eSports fan in the UK will have the opportunity to work alongside the government to shape the country’s developing eSports scene. This is thanks to a new job created by the Department for Media, Culture and Sport (DMCS) titled ‘Head of Video Games and ESports’.
Details About the Job
The DCMS posted the job on its LinkedIn page, along with all the relevant information. The successful candidate will work in Manchester and have a salary of between £51,100 and £61,100 per annum for the full-time role.
The job’s official description is as follows:
The role will allow the successful candidate to develop different policy skills, advise officials and Ministers across the organisation, and undertake wide-ranging internal and external stakeholder engagement within the creative industries.– Department for Culture, Media and Sport, Government Department’s ESports Job Description, ESports-News
The role has been described as ‘highly interesting and stretching’. Whoever ends up securing the job will work on a range of key issues related to both the growth and competitiveness of the UK’s gaming industry. They will also look at the effects games have on society.
Some of the position’s main responsibilities include:
- Facilitating the growth of both the eSports and video games industries

- Playing an important leadership role within organisations based both in the UK and overseas
- Enacting, influencing and responding to Ministerial daily priorities
- Taking charge of two direct reports
- Working closely with other teams within the DCMS
More than 100 people have applied for the job. On June 5th, an information session will provide those interested in the role with more details about what it will involve. Anyone interested in joining this has to apply through LinkedIn by 3 pm on June 4th.
Government Urged to Back the Gaming Industry More
The creation of this job is likely down to calls for the government to provide firmer backing for the gaming industry. The games body Ukie said that without government support, the gaming industry could miss out on half a billion pounds of revenue.
Ukie has reported 73,000 jobs across game development studios in the UK. Together, these contribute roughly £6 billion in GVA (gross value added) per year. Ukie believes that with support, the industry could have another 6,000 jobs.
ESports continues to grow in popularity in the UK. It’s even been linked to royalty after Prince William visited an eSports youth club in April. During his time at Mentivity Community Centre in Southwark, he played some video games and discussed the centre’s development with community leaders.
