Wham! Are Bookies’ Favourites for Chart Top Spot – Like Last Christmas

Wham! are odds-on to top the charts on Christmas Day, and it is even money for snow to land at Aberdeen Airport.

Key Facts:

  • Wham! are top-priced 8/11 to claim Christmas No.1 for the third time.
  • 5/1 Kylie Minogue is the only single-figured Christmas No. 1 contender.
  • The Met Office forecast suggests snow on Christmas Day is a long shot.

Online bookmaker, William Hill, has gone out on a limb by quoting Wham! as 8/11 its betting favourite to claim the distinction of Christmas No.1 song. Rival firms quote the 80s pop duo on far shorter odds of 2/5.

Their song, ‘Last Christmas’, was kept from the top spot in its release year, 1984, by Band Aid’s ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas’. It spent five weeks at number two at the time, but the George Michael-penned tune did not reach No. 1 status until New Year’s Day 2021.

In 2023, for the first time, the famous festive jingle justified bookmaker forecasts and claimed the top spot at Christmas. It also topped the charts in 2024. Proceeds from the song – destined initially for Ethiopian famine relief efforts – continue to go to charity.

Spokesman of William Hill, Lee Phelps, said: “Wham! are our odds-on favourites to be Christmas No.1 for the second year running. Kylie Minogue is the only other [artist] on a single-figure price, 5/1. Taylor Swift is 12/1 to top the charts on Christmas Day for the first time in the UK.”

Will LadBaby Take Aim at a Sixth No.1

Rival firms have a plethora of artists quoted on 16/1. The most intriguing are YouTube stars LadBaby, who rattled off five consecutive Christmas No. 1s from 2018. Their songs – novelty tunes that were parody covers of classics such as Starship’s 1985 single ‘We Built This City’ – raised money for food bank charity the Trussell Trust.

LadBaby did not release a song in 2023 (or 2024) with frontman Mark Hoyle declaring, via a November 2023 Facebook video: “I am not retiring, this isn’t me done for good, I’m just saying I’m out this year.”

Traditionally, LadBaby has not declared its intention to enter the Christmas No.1 race with a song and trademark fun video until the first or second week of December. So far, a firm “no” has not been forthcoming on the subject of a 2025 song. With wavering YouTube views, it would be no surprise if the married pair made a return.

Warm Prices on a White Christmas

Meanwhile, William Hill believe Aberdeen is the most likely UK city to see snow on Christmas Day. Flakes falling from the sky above the Scottish city are quoted on even-money odds by the online betting site. Newcastle (6/4) leads the charge for English cities.

Snow on Christmas Day 2025 Odds:

  • Aberdeen Airport – evens
  • Edinburgh Airport – 5/4
  • Glasgow Airport – 5/4
  • Newcastle Airport – 6/4
  • Belfast Airport – 2/1
  • Leeds-Bradford Airport – 5/2

Early indications from the Met Office suggest that none of these prices represent value. The UK’s national meteorological service’s most recent long-range weather forecast makes no mention of snow anywhere across the UK, up to and including December 23.

It reads: “Later in the month, details are uncertain, but it may become wetter in the south and perhaps a little drier in the north. Temperatures will probably be above average overall.” The UK temperature average in December is 6.86 degrees Celsius.
