Key Facts:

  • Bookies believe a Saudi Pro League or MLS side is next for Mo Salah.
  • Al-Ittihad Jeddah and Al-Nassr Riyadh are widely tipped as Mo Salah’s new clubs.
  • Inter Miami CF reportedly ready to make an offer rivalling any Saudi bid.
  • Salah’s final Liverpool game is likely to be against Brentford at Anfield on May 24.

With confirmation that Mo Salah is set to leave Anfield at the end of the season, bookmakers have sprung into action. What was once idle gossip has become a full-blown global guessing game, and online betting sites have quickly made themselves available to fans who want to make financial speculation.

Offering odds on everything from a lucrative switch to the Middle East to a romantic return to Europe, the UK’s online bookmakers have all the bases covered. However, unlike betting on the World Cup, the betting firms are not in universal agreement, meaning their odds are not aligned.

No Move Yet for Record-Breaking Salah

Salah arrived at Anfield from Roma in the summer of 2017 for a then club record £36.9 million. His nine years at the club have yielded the Champions League and two Premier League titles among various other trophies.

The Egyptian, boasting 255 goals in 435 appearances, will leave Liverpool a year before his contract was due to expire on a free transfer. In doing so, he will say goodbye to an estimated £400,000-a-week salary.

In a forthright Tweet/X posted shortly after the news of Salah’s departure broke, his agent, Ramy Abbas Issa, insisted that no move has been lined up for the four-time Golden Boot winner. It is the kind of speak that bookmakers, who could be susceptible to insider trading, like to hear.

Is Saudi the Plan for Salah?

At the head of the betting sits the ever-expanding Saudi Pro League – a reflection not only of the league’s ambition but of the financial packages reportedly offered to elite football talent. Clubs such as Al-Ittihad Jeddah and Al-Nassr Riyadh are widely tipped as frontrunners.

For many bookmakers, a move to Saudi Arabia is the obvious outcome. However, while the BetMGM sportsbook quotes Al-Ittihad Jeddah as its 11/10 betting favourite, the odds compilers at the sportsbook arm of BetVictor Casino are offering 6/4 about Salah joining any Saudi club.

Gibraltar-based BetVictor believe a move to Major League Soccer is more likely. A report in Wednesday’s Independent suggests that Inter Miami CF is ready to make an offer to rival any Saudi bid. The prospect of Salah playing alongside Lionel Messi does excite. Will it happen? BetVictor says it is 2/1 that Salah ends up with any MLS team.

8/1 for a Mo Move to France, Spain or Italy

For simplicity, BetVictor has bundled together destination countries rather than specific teams. Individually, the likelihood of the 33-year-old next playing for any French, Spanish or Italian clubs is quoted at 8/1. Amongst these, rival betting firms believe Paris Saint-Germain (14/1), Real Madrid (16/1) and AS Roma (20/1) are the most likely destinations.

The BetVictor betting list has ‘any German club’ quoted on 14/1. A move there would almost certainly be to Bayern Munich (18/1). Thereafter, Turkish, Portuguese, and South American league sides are offered at 33/1 odds.

Those who believe Salah may stay in the UK can avail of 33/1 odds about a transfer to Newcastle, either Manchester club, Chelsea, Arsenal or the most unlikely of all, Tottenham. One outcome, however, is not quoted: retirement from the sport.

Liverpool’s final Premier League game of the season, against Brentford at Anfield on May 24, is likely to be Mo Salah’s final start for Liverpool. The Champions League final is scheduled for the weekend after that. However, heading into a quarter-final clash with Paris Saint-Germain, the English side are 4/1 to reach the competition decider.
