Key Facts:

  • The Seatle Seahawks win Super Bowl LX.
  • Jason Myers kicks a record five field goals but misses out on MVP award.
  • A $100,000 losing bet was placed on ‘tails’ in the Super Bowl coin toss.
  • The Seahawks are 8/1 to retain the Super Bowl title in 2027.

The Seattle Seahawks are the new Super Bowl Champions. The NFC Champions were always in control in a low-scoring defensive showdown until the floodgates opened in the final quarter.

The fun started with New England winning the toss when the Seahawks called tails, and the coin landed on heads. The Patriots deferred, giving the Seahawks the ball to start the game and New England possession to start the second half.

In a game played in mild Santa Clara conditions, Seattle’s Jason Myers put his side ahead with a 33-yard field goal in the game’s opening drive. A three-point lead was doubled with a second field goal with 11 minutes 16 seconds to play in the second quarter.

Online betting sites pre-game -4.5 Seattle handicap line had been breached, but the confrontation had already developed into the ‘battle of the defences’ experts had predicted. Halfway through the second quarter, when nine possessions had resulted in seven punts, the in-play bookmaker’s line had been moved to +/- 7.5 points.

Placekicker’s Odds Tumble Not Fumble

With 11 seconds left on the halftime clock, Seattle extended their lead to nine. As Bad Bunny took to the stage for the fabled halftime show, the spread was 8.5 and Jason Myers, the only player to score, was into 18/1 (from 200/1) for MVP honours.

Fans are responsible for 20 per cent of the Super Bowl MVP vote. The remaining 80 per cent is determined by 16 members of a media panel who submit their ballots around the two-minute warning at the end of the game. Would they vote for a placekicker?

In less than a minute of second-half play, the Seahawks were back in possession, and the line on total points had moved to 26.5. If the bookmakers’ projections were proven correct,Super Bowl LX would have been the fifth-lowest-scoring Super Bowl of all time.

That line dropped further, to 24.5, as New England could not get through Seattle’s defensive wall – repeatedly going three-and-out. Seattle fared little better, but they had added a fourth three-point field goal to take the score to 12-0 as the clock counted down to the end of the third quarter.

Finally Super Bowl Touchdowns

Would this be the first Super Bowl in the game’s 59-year history not to feature a touchdown? No, a decisive turnover at the turn of the fourth quarter meant the favourites had little to do to reach the end zone. A 16-yard touchdown followed.

Just three plays later, the Patriots also found the end zone, replying with seven points of their own. The score was now 19-7, and despite 12 points separating the two teams (with 12 minutes left on the clock), there was a sense of ‘game on’. The bookmakers’ total points line moved back up to 33.5.

The game was on, but not the comeback. Jason Myers quickly registered his fifth field goal of the match – claiming a new record for most field goals in a Super Bowl – to take the scores to 22-7. A 44-yard fumble return for a touchdown saw Seattle extend its lead to 29-7 soon afterwards.

Late Patriots Touchdown to Make Scoreline Respectable

For three quarters of the game, glass eyes were falling asleep all around the globe. Those who had gone low on the points line were counting their money. But the Patriots, while clearly beaten, were not giving up and with 2min 21sec left on the clock, they claimed a second touchdown.

It was the final scoring play of the game, taking the scoreline to 29-13, putting 42 points on the board – something that looked very unlikely for much of the game. And so, Seattle took the Super Bowl for the second time and avenged their heartbreaking 2015 loss to New England.

Controversially, it was Kenneth Walker, one of the pre-game favourites, who claimed the MVP award. In doing so, he became the first running back to take the prize since Terrell Davis in Super Bowl XXXII.

The Bulk of Big Money Bets Were Big Losers

Globally, there is little doubt that when all the sums are added, the 2026 Super Bowl will prove to be the biggest ever in terms of betting turnover. It is also likely to be one of the bookmakers’ most substantial winners, as the game was not the close encounter many predicted.

Many U.S. sportsbooks had given details of their six and seven-figure wagers ahead of the game. The bulk, including a $142,000 bet on New England at +14.5, was on the Patriots. One Caesars Sportsbook customer even placed $100,000 on ‘tails’ in the coin toss, which proved to be a loser.

Coral bookmakers were amongst the first to react to the Super Bowl LX result. It quotes the Seahawks at 8/1 odds to retain the Vince Lombardi Trophy in 2027. The Los Angeles Rams (9/1) and the Buffalo Bills (12/1) follow in the betting.
