Ohio has a complex gambling history. While casino gambling was only recently legalized, other forms of gambling have existed for decades. Pro-gaming advocates faced a long struggle to legalize casinos. Here’s a timeline of key events:

• 1933: In the year 1933 Ohio’s general assembly legalised horse race betting, which still thrives at 6 different racinos to this day.
• 1980 – 2009: In the year 1980 the state legalised the first lottery by popular vote, of which there are a few variations even now. In the same year the assembly vetoed the push for the legalisation of casinos. In the following years there were another two pushes for casino gambling, and one for legalised riverboat gambling, all of which were denied.
• 2009 – Present: Eventually, in 2009, four cities were given the green light to host licensed casinos. These four cities are now the most thriving places in the state.
• 2012: The first of Ohio’s casinos opened, marking the start of the state’s modern casino era.

Upcoming Changes in the Gambling Regulation

In September of 2019, two bills from both sides of the isle were put forward to legalize sports betting on professional and college sporting events. Most believe the bill will pass positively in the next few months. This will usher in a whole new stream of gaming revenue for the state.
