Online Gambling Risk to Seniors Help Available

Gambling addiction among the older demographic otherwise known as seniors is a concern for governments and operators who don’t want harm to befall anyone that enjoys punting. The problem that online gambling presents to seniors is the access factor which is also a good thing in so much that the senior citizen doesn’t have to go out to enjoy gambling. Seniors are generally known for being cautious and frugal with their hard earned savings and one would think they wouldn’t let gambling become an issue. At land based casinos seniors develop a need for the excitement and sense of belonging that casinos offer. At online casinos there is the freedom to play at anytime and anywhere which gives the older person another kind of experience.

Unfortunately the senior can be caught up in the experience when wins occur or they feel they can win back their losses something many gamblers think. Senior gamblers may not be willing to discuss gambling due to embarrassment at their inability to control the activity, they fear losing the respect of peers, or worry that they will be unable to maintain their independence. Some older punters may also not deal with the emotional and stressful issues which led to their uncontrolled behavior and they may deny that they have a problem, gambling or otherwise. There may be cognitive issues which cause a lack of foresight or recognition that there are consequences to their actions and they may not realize the significance of their financial losses.

There are resources for seniors seeking help with gambling issues as well as information for their family members who are sometimes affected. The National Council on Problem Gambling has a list of programs and treatment options in the U.S. and the Problem Gambling Institute of Ontario has a list of Canadian resources.
