Japanese Casino Industry Requests More Funding From Government

Japan’s Casino Regulatory Commission (CRC) has requested additional funding from the government due to the financial detriment caused by the global pandemic. The five-member party have made official contact with parliament figures to request assistance after a difficult economic year, they believe that the casino industry has been left out of aid programs due to the nature of the activity. There’s no confirmation on whether they will receive the necessary funding, however, they are confident that when the government make a decision in the next month, they will receive a financial bailout.

The CRC is tasked with keeping the casino industry afloat by maintaining legislative ideals and delegating resources between all the firms involved. While they remain distanced from gambling firms, they are desperate to help revive the industry. Online betting has overtaken the casino as the most popular method of betting, and it’s no surprise. While many were stuck at home, unable to access land-based establishments, internet-based alternatives were the simple solution, and their popularity has exploded since the beginning of the pandemic. Australia has reported an unprecedented rise in online sportsbook usage.

Japanese casinos are bound by several strict regulations preventing them from opening on Sundays but also restricting their advertising rights. The CRC will maintain control of the industry for the foreseeable future and act as the government stand-in for all things related to casinos and online betting. Government promotion standards have selected the five-member board, and there is no requirement for personal changes every few years. They will be able to get a firm grasp of the current state of the industry.

The CRC’s official website has asked for funding to boost their 2022 resources budget, which is money delegated to companies in need of emergency financial aid. They received almost $38 million in capital to help them through the whole of 2021 and the pandemic’s many struggles. While it may seem like a lot, Japanese casinos are widespread throughout the country and have high overhead costs. Osaka, Tokyo, and many other major Japanese cities have some of the biggest casinos in Asia.

Japan legalized casino gambling for the first time at the beginning of the 21st century. Surprisingly it was one of the first countries in Asia to do so, before China who only permitted online betting five years ago. Compared to last year’s financial aid, the Japanese CRC is requesting an additional $7 million added to the previous bailout package. Considering economic forecasting, financial assistance may need to continue for the next six years due to the severe economic impact of the pandemic.

How Cheap Is Your Pride?

Despite the casino industry’s obvious need for financial aid, several media tabloids have criticized the land-based gambling sector for being greedy and prioritizing itself over other leisure industries. Live music, cinemas, and major retailers have all suffered and are requesting additional capital from the government. The casinos are set to receive one of the biggest capital injections in all of Japan. Many are upset at the government’s decision-making.

Tokyo officials are set to hold a meeting discussing the need for financial aid next week, and the CRC are expected to attend to plead their case to government members. Due to the importance of the matter, they are likely to succeed. If they do, they can help restore economic equilibrium for the casino industry as it is currently destabilized.

While the CRC has only five senior members, the organization is supported by a network of 150 employees ranging from analysts to communication officers and accountants. They are one of the most well-funded operations in Japan’s governmental regime, and since the pandemic, they have been in constant contact with the country’s leaders to establish communications in case this situation arises.
